Reading the National Narrative

Glittering Prizes

May 8, 2022

A very nice review of my new book appears in the May issue of Literary Review of Canada

"As Francis skillfully demonstrates," writes reviewer Marisa Grizenko, "the place called Vancouver has always had a rich story -- if you know where to look and to whom to listen." You can read her piece in the pages of the magazine or it is available online at the website.

The review also features another new book about Vancouver, Finding Nothing by Gregory Betts, about the literary avant-garde in the city in the 1960s and 1970s. By coincidence both books were recently shortlisted for the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize, which each year acknowledges some leading scholarly books about British Columbia. A Long Way to Paradise by the late Bob McDonald was also on the list. Betts took home the prize but hey, as they say at the Oscars, I'm happy just to be nominated.
