Friday evening found me downtown at the annual Mayor's Arts Awards. This year's award for achievement in the literary arts went to my pal George Fetherling so I went along to raise the general noise level.

The Science Centre is a weird venue for such an event, formal and distant. But host Bill Richardson was his usual witty, eloquent self and so were several of the acceptance speeches. An added pleasure was to see a book from my friends at Arsenal Pulp Press, How Poetry Saved My Life by Amber Dawn, carry off the City of Vancouver Book Award.

Back to George. Of all his many books my favourite remains his wonderful, harrowing memoir, Travels By Night, first published in 1994, so it is good news that it is going to be republished in the spring. Watch for it.
